Genuine Alligator Watch Straps from VOELEN

The American alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), the world's finest luxury leather, has been used for centuries by the world's finest craftsmen to make top-quality leather goods.

VOELEN uses the highest grade, CITES-tagged, farm-raised Louisiana alligator leather to build its alligator watch straps.

Our alligator straps are hand-made in the USA with a nubuck leather lining, and we use butterfly buckles versus a standard tang buckle to preserve and extend the alligator watch strap's lifespan. We individually select the skins, finishes, and colors from our American tannery to match our watch collections and produce limited runs of alligator watch straps.

NOTE: We produce both 20mm and 22mm width watch straps. If you are buying a watch strap for the Mechanical Collection, you must purchase a 22mm strap.

Each alligator skin used in producing VOELEN alligator leather watch straps is CITES tagged, guaranteeing that it is part of a sustainable use program.

What is CiTES?

CITES stands for the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species. It is an international agreement between governments whose goal is to ensure that commercial trade in specimens of animals and plants does not threaten them with extinction.

Typically, commercially traded wildlife species are not endangered. The CITES agreement was put in place to ensure the sustainability of trade in wildlife to ensure these natural resources for future generations.

Why is CITES regulating American alligators since they are not an endangered species?

American alligators are not an endangered or threatened species, but CITES controls them since they resemble species of endangered alligators or crocodiles.

Are VOELEN alligator leather straps waterproof?

What are the different finish types?

VOELEN uses four different types of finishes when producing alligator bands, Glazed, Matte, Millenium, and Nubuck.

GLAZED FINISH

A "glazed" finish is the oldest and most traditional way to finish alligator leather. This "high-gloss" finish is created by polishing the skin using a "glazing jack," which uses a cylinder made from smooth stone or glass. After treatment, glazed alligator leather is stiff but softens over time. As it wears, glazed alligator leather takes on a soft glow or a slightly duller patina. It is important to note that glazed alligator finishes are protein finishes, which should never get wet.

MATTE FINISH

A "matte" finish is smooth, almost "silky" to the touch. This type of finish is durable and oil and water-resistant (NOT WATERPROOF). Matte alligator finishes are used in many leather goods because of weather resistance and durability.

MILLENNIUM FINISH

A "millennium" finish is best described as a combination of glazed and matte finishes. The millennium finish has a slightly less glossy finish than glazed leather. Still, it includes the durability and softness of a matte finish.

NUBUCK FINISH

A "nubuck" finish is a soft "suede-like" leather finish with a great feel. However, it requires exceptional care as suede finishes absorb dirt and oils and stain when exposed to liquids.

Why are there price differences between the straps?

VOELEN prices alligator watch straps based on the cost of the alligator leather and the yield (number of watch straps that can be made) per leather piece. There is a significant variation in price and availability of specific colors and finishes in top-grade (grade 1) alligator leathers. When selecting different straps using our product selector, you will see the price change based on the watch strap color and finish.
